UZ CHS Research Support Centre

The University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences (UZ-CHS) RSC was established in 2010, as a one-stop centre for research support to faculty and students. The RSC provides research support services that include identification and dissemination of funding opportunities, grant proposal development and submission, award negotiation, project and financial management. The RSC operates in close liaison with other university structures guiding and supporting research including the College Research Board, the Postgraduate Office and the Central Finance Office.

Background

The RSC was established by the University Of Zimbabwe College Of Health Sciences (UZ-CHS) in mid-2010, funded by the Welcome Trust of UK under the Southern Africa Consortium of Research Excellence (SACORE). The RSC provides a platform for faculty and students to obtain the much needed and awaited research support services. One of its main goals is to develop a vibrant, sustainable research culture in the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences by building a critical mass of research scientists. It is also aimed at developing strong leadership in research, setting up attractive career pathways, and developing comprehensive research management and support systems.

Some of the key support services include identification and dissemination of funding opportunities, proposal development and submission, negotiating works and contracts with funding agencies, project and financial management, dissemination of results and knowledge translation. Effective management of research is essential in engendering a research culture and promoting state of the art and evidence based health practice, teaching and learning.

Since its establishment, the RSC has grown its activities requiring the funding base to be expanded. Funding streams now include National Institute of Health, (NIH, USA), the Netherlands-African Partnership for Capacity Development and Clinical Interventions Against Poverty-Related Disease (NACCAP), NORHED Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research Development and the Zimbabwe Research Innovation Management (ZiRM).


Research Methodology/ Proposal Writing Workshop 07 – 11 May 2018

The Research Support Centre recently conducted a five (5) days Research Methodology/Proposal Writing workshop on the 7-11 May 2018. The course was targeted at junior researchers including undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members involved in health research. 14 people successfully enrolled in the training.

The course provided an intensive introduction to Research Methodology including problem identification, research designs, and data collection methods with a focus in developing skills in proposal writing. It also introduces a range of research tools and researchers were equipped to plan and implement their research.


SACORE Partner Institutions Inspection Site Visit to UZCHS, 26 March 2015

SACORE Secretariat conducted sites inspection visit to the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences (UZCHS) on 26 March 2015 with the aim to review the financial and grants management systems and procedures and appreciate the governance structure of the newly established Research Support Centres. The main areas of focus were governance and risk management, grant management, information management, business continuity plans, financial controls, human resources and student/fellowship management.
